Gear Up For Memorial Day: Free Cooking Class At Williams-Sonoma

Williams-Sonoma is teaming up with A Tasting Table, a popular food site, to plan an inspiring Memorial Day menu which will be presented at its complimentary technique class on May 19.

Looking For Art? Try Faust Park's Spring Arts & Crafts Festival This Weekend

Faust County Park in Chesterfield is one of our favorite places in the St. Louis area. Combine the park with art and you have a great way to spend a spring weekend.

The Faust Park Spring Arts and Crafts Festival will be in full swing this weekend. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $3 per person.
For this juried event, artists will be on site offering original work in water color, oil and acrylics, sculpture, jewelry, photography and more. Guests may speak to the artists, enjoy live music and lots of refreshments. In addition, the Historic Village is open for tours and the park is in full Spring glory.

All types of art –water color, oil and acrylics, sculpture, jewelry and photography–will be on sale at this juried event. Entertainment includes live music. Food will also be available. Faust’s Historic Village will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Free: Eureka Days
 This Weekend At Lions & Legion Parks

A parade, a fireworks display  a talent expo, a cruise and car show and live music by Dave Bennett, the Smash Band, MidLifeVice and the Well Hungarians highlight Eureka Days Sept. 8-10, 2011 in Eureka.

Eureka Days kicked off with a carnival preview night on Thursday in Lions and Legion Parks.

Also featured will be a U. S. Army Rock Wall, a trampoline bungee, a kids corner,  a Run For Sight, a St. Louis Radio Control Flyers demonstration. A grass volleyball tournament will be underway Saturday afternoon.

The cruise and car show begins at the Holiday Inn in Eureka and continues through Old Town Eureka.

Dave Bennett and Smash Band perform on Friday night and Mid Life Vice and the Well Hungarians on Saturday night. The fireworks will be at 9:30 p.m., Saturday at Legion Park.

Carnival tickets are $1 each or $18 each for a sheet of 24 in advance or $20 at the event.

Free: USAF Band of Mid-America Ensemble To Present Family Concert Under The Arch On Sunday

The United States Air Force Band of Mid-America Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble will present a free family concert under St. Louis’ Gateway Arch on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011.

The concert will take place at 3 p.m. on the grounds of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, 11 North Fourth Street in downtown St. Louis. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11,  2001, the USAF Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble has planned a remembrance concert.  The repertoire of this group of 18 professional enlisted musicians ranges from traditional big band jazz, to bebop and swing, to modern jazz.  The Shades of Blue is said to reflect the heritage and pride of the nation and the United States Air Force.

Concert goers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and dance and sing along with the entertainment.
In the event of inclement weather, concerts will take place in the Gateway Arch lobby.

The concert is one in a series of free family concerts the National Park Service will present during September.  Upcoming concerts are:

Sept. 18, Springboard’s River City Ramblers Dixieland Band

Sept. 25, The Farnum Family:  American Heritage Music.

All the concerts begin at 3 p.m.

Financial assistance for this project has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.

Free: Tour The World At Festival Of Nations In Tower Grove Park

It’s the return of one of the best of the best St. Louis festivals and the one that lets you travel the globe without leaving town!

The International Institute’s Festival of Nations is two days of non-stop dance, non-stop music and non-stop head-pounding as you try to decide which yummy ethnic goodies to go with. All we can say is so many delectable choices and only two days to eat them in!

The fun–emanating from 70 different ethnic groups–begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 in Tower Grove Park near Grand and Arsenal and runs until 7 p.m. On Sunday it’s 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

There’s a lot of action packed into just two days:

• The Enterprise Main Stage will have three different ethnic performance troupes each hour. The stage is located on a shady hill in Festival West.

• The Village Green, in the grassy Festival East will feature performances where the audience can join in and learn to dance.

• The World Music Stage, across from the Sons of Rest Shelter, will feature traditional and modern bands.

Folk Grove Stage also in Festival East is where you’ll find storytellers, puppeteers and acoustic music.

• The Wells Fargo Pavilion Stage in Festival North will house a mixture of bands, dancers and singers.

• There will also be craft demonstrations, booths with ethnic crafts, calligraphy, children’s crafts, African hair braiding, henna decorating , an ethnic gift bazaar and a pet rest stop.

In the Global Corner visitors can learn about the culture of St. Louis’ 15 sister cities — from Bologna to Wuhan to Georgetown to Stuttgart and many sites between.

New this year you can get your very own passport and fill it out as you learn take part in this interactive learning center. Sponsored by the St. Louis Sister Cities Program, World Trade Center-St. Louis.

Families can try a variety of ethnic activities including doing African face painting, making an ethnic instrument or creating an aboriginal artwork at the Family Art & Crafts section.

Don’t miss the Tibetan gift booth with colorful traditional butter sculptures and Hiroshi Tada, the Japanese Top Spinner, showcasing his skills throughout the Festival.

Oh, and did we mention the food, the wonderful, exciting, tasty, unique food? There are more than 40 ethnic food booths!

Loufest: 18 Indie Bands On Two Stages In Forest Park This Weekend

Okay, we know this isn’t free and it’s not exactly cheap, but for real indie music fans this festival is worth the cost ($38 for one day; $64 for both days). Plus, you gotta splurge sometime and this event gives you a lot for the money.

Loufest, which happens this weekend at Central Field in Forest Park, jams with 18 bands (yes, 18!) on two stages.

If you’re bringing the family along, you’ll be happy to know about Area K, a part of Loufest just for families. (Kids 10 and under get into Loufest free with a ticket-holding adult.)

Kids will be able to design Mad Hatter hats with folks from the Magic House, make scary masks with the help of the Missouri Botanical Garden and Saint Louis Art Museum and jam with Fazio’s Rock Academy. And, this year Area K has its own stage that will feature the six winners of Loufest’s high school Battle of the Bands competition.  Check out the schedule. Area K is open from noon to 6 p.m.

Loufest is a sustainable music festival and encourages traveling green to the event by taking Metro, your bike or a carpool to the event or just plain walking there. If you bike to the fest, you can use the valet bike parking, courtesy of Trailnet. Check out Trailnet’s map of routes to get you to LouFest from all points around St Louis.

For LouFest weekend, Metro is extending service to the Forest Park Trolley that stops at Central Field. The Trolley will rus every 20 minutes from 9 a.m. until 20 minutes after the last act each night (approximately 10:30 p.m.). Catch it at theForest Park/DeBalivier station.
