Free: Sixth Annual Grove Fest On Saturday, Oct. 1

The sixth annual Grove Fest takes place from 4 p.m. to midnight, Oct. 1, 2011 along Manchester Road between Tower Grove and Boyle avenues.

This yearly street festival includes live music,street performances and food for purchase from several restaurants.

Entertainment includes DJ Needles, Palace, DJ Alejan, The Holler, The Stone Sugar Shakedown, the Force, Gateway Men’s Chorus, 1BandCounting, Aaron Kamm and the One Drops.

There will also be No Coast Skateboard demos and live art by Art Dimensions.

Group Hug At The Grove Today, Monday, May 30, 2011

Sarah and Manchester in the Grove neighborhood is the place to be today 5/30/11 if you want to be part of a St. Louis group hug.

The hug will happen at 5 p.m. at the Grove sign.  The photo will be submitted in the GROUPHUG photo competition sponsored by City Affair. The organizations says it is the first event of its kind in the nation.

You can also hug your favorite St. Louis place/landmark/person and snap a photo to enter in the competition.  On June 2, participants and friends are invited to attend the GROUPHUG party to view pics, listen to music and express their love for STL. Winners will be awarded prizes including a $100 cash top prize.

Cleveland-based Saving Cities will be filming portions of the event and conducting interviews to document grassroots efforts to “save” Rust Belt cities.  For more information, visit www.savingcities.com

Tour De Grove: Bike Races All Weekend; Pub Crawl Saturday Night

Tour De Grove, Missouri’s largest cycling race, is set to kick off in the Grove neighborhood this afternoon. It’s the only race in the region on the prestigious USA Cycling National Racing calendar (NRC) and the USA Crit Championship Series.  The weekend includes includes US hand-cycling races, children’s races, and a 5K run/walk, all with cash prizes.

The Grove is a St. Louis business district located along Manchester Road between Kingshighway and Vandeventer.

The action starts this afternoon with the Midtown Rally Grand Prix. Onsite registration for the Midtown Rally Grand Prix begins at 3 p.m. with the first category pedaling off at 4 p.m.  Click here to see the schedule of events.

Saturday’s events start at 9 a.m. with” The Running of the Grove,” a 5K run/walk on the the Tour de Grove criterium race course. Registration, which can be done from 8-8:59 a.m., is $30 and includes a race t-shirt and cap. According to the Tour De Grove website, the course is a  fast and flat 5K mile circuit (2 laps) featureing two bridge crossings and a flat wide open finish. The race offers $1700 in cash and age group prizes.

The Tour De Grove bike action begins at 9:40 a.m. Saturday with various categories at different start times. Bikers can register onsite between 8 and 8:59 a.m. onsite. The races continue all day with various categories. You can check out the details here.

There’s even a Tour De Grove kids race at 2:30 p.m. Children’s activities include complimentary helmet giveaways and helmet fitting from Helmets First, face-painting, balloons, crafts.  Registration for the race begins at 12:30 p.m. According to the Tour De Grove website: “Kids, ages Big Wheel to 12, will be able to race or ride across the exact same finish line as the pros. . .Racing distance will be approximately 200+ meters.”

The $5 entry fee includes a Tour de Grove T-Shirt, special St. Louis Science Center packet, City Museum coupons, Jelly Belly Pro Cycling Team schwag, a Tour de Grove Coloring Poster designed by Rokitmul, an official race number , awards ribbons and more. Proceeds will go towards The Grove and Dutchtown neighborhood charities.

Age classes are divided into six categories, (Big Wheel, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8. 9-10, 11-12) making for fair and fun competition. Participants should arrive and register one hour prior to race start- registration closes 15 minutes prior to the races.

The top three finishers in each category will receive custom Tour de Grove Build-a-Bears from Build-a-Bear Workshop.

Art Crank, a poster show of bicycle-themed art featuring local artists and printmakers, is on display at Atomic Cowboy , 4140 Manchester, through Sunday.

Top off the day after the races at the  first-ever Tour de Grove Pub Crawl. A $15 ticket will get you four drinks at participating bars. Tickets will be sold at the Grove CID booth on Saturday. Three-wheel bicycle taxi drivers will provide complimentary rides to event-goers to surrounding restaurants and bars.
