St. Louisan and popular suspense author Ridley Pearson will discuss and sign of his latest thriller “The Risk Agent” at 7 p.m., Monday, July 2 at St. Louis County Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd.
The event is sponsored by the St. Louis County Library Foundation and Pudd’nHead Books.
The program is free and open to the public. Pudd’nHead Books will be selling copies of Pearson’s book at the event.
The County Library describes the book this way:
“Rich with the atmosphere of Shanghai and crackling with tension-filled suspense, bestselling suspense author Ridley Pearson’s latest introduces two compelling new characters—and heralds in the start of a brilliant new series.
A Chinese national working for an American construction company is grabbed off the streets of Shanghai in broad daylight. His one-man security detail goes missing as well. Rutherford Risk is a firm specializing in extraction: the negotiation for, and the recovery of hostages. Private investigation is illegal in today’s China. Operating within her borders will be difficult at best.
The security company recruits two unique outsiders to do their bidding. Grace Chu is a forensic accountant hired to follow the money; John Knox is a civilian with unparalleled training in both combat and culture. Grace’s top-notch American education and Chinese military service make her an unassuming, but effective, operative, while Knox’s take-no-prisoners attitude brings them perilously close to harm. Following the money leads to more complex – and dangerous – consequences than either anticipated. Who is actually behind the kidnapping? And more important, can Knox and Grace locate the two hostages ahead of the deadline?“The Risk Agent” is brimming with all the classic Pearson elements fans and literary critics love. Inventive story lines, crisp prose, and breathtaking scenery—it’s all here along with expert pacing and an edge-of-your seat crime story.”
Pearson’s books have been translated into 20 languages with more than six million copies sold. He is the author of 17 New York Times bestselling suspense novels for adults and numerous popular young adult adventure novels, including the Kingdom Keepers series and the Peter and the Starcatcher series, co-written with Dave Barry.

The St. Louis County Library Foundation is hosting a visit by author Gregory Maguire for a discussion and signing of the final novel in his internationally acclaimed Wicked series “Out of Oz” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 15 in the Main Reading Roo, of Library Headquarters,1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd. in Ladue.
The program is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase at the event from Pudd’nHead Books.
According to a Library press release:
Gregory Maguire’s “Wicked” was published in 1995 to great acclaim and established Maguire as one of the most brilliant and original literary minds of our time. In it, the author created a rich fantasy world based on the characters and setting of “The Wizard of Oz,” as told from the point of view of the antagonist of L. Frank Baum’s classic tale. Offering a different look into the land of Oz, one full of political and social unrest, Maguire first introduced readers to a green-skinned girl named Elphaba, the misunderstood creature who grows up to become the villain of Baum’s beloved story.
“Wicked” soon found champions and critical praise worldwide, and became the basis for the musical “Wicked”—one of the most successful Broadway productions in history. Currently in its eighth year on Broadway, the Tony Award-winning musical has been seen by nearly 28 million people, bringing the book, musical, and Maguire international renown.
Maguire’s second volume in the Wicked Years series, “Son of a Witch” told the story of Elphaba’s son, Liir. A third volume, “A Lion Among Men,” followed the story of Brrr, the Cowardly Lion. Both novels were instant national bestsellers.
Now in “Out of Oz: The Final Volume in the Wicked Years,” Maguire once again takes readers back to the marvelous land of Oz, where The Emerald City is mounting an invasion of Munchkinland, Glinda is held under house arrest, and the Cowardly Lion is on the run from the law. Amidst the chaos, Elphaba’s granddaughter, Rain, comes of age to take up her broom in an Oz wracked by war.
Gregory Maguire’s “Out of Oz” brings the world of Oz full circle, in an imaginative and stunning conclusion to one of the most beloved and bestselling series in modern American literature.
