Free: Veterans Day Parade In Downtown St. Louis On Saturday

Show your support for our Armed Forces personnel and veterans at the St. Louis Veterans Day Parade in downtown St. Louis on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012.

The event begins with patriotic music at 10 a.m. and a ceremony at 10:30.

Activities begin at 10:30 a.m. with a ceremony to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces on the Chestnut Street patio and steps of Soldiers Memorial.

A fly-over of vintage aircraft will follow the ceremony at approximately 11:55 a.m.

Soldiers Memorial is open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday but will be closed during the ceremony.

A Massing of the Colors formation will lead the parade which begins at noon at Tucker and Chestnut. The parade then moves west on Chestnut to 14th Street, south on 14th Street to Market, west on Market to St. Louis Union Station at 20th Street.

Free: Taste Of St. Louis This Weekend

Here’s your chance to sample some of the best food St. Louis has to offer.

The Charter Taste of St. Louis is back this weekend–Friday, Sept. 28-Sunday, Sept. 30 at Soldiers Memorial in downtown St. Louis.

This is the foodie event of the year–an award-winning celebration of the best food with art, music and culture thrown in for good measure. And,  St. Louis Post Dispatch readers voted it the “Best Family Festival” in the region.

The event features:

  • Celebrity Chef appearances
  • More than 50 restaurants selling their wares on Restaurant Row
  • Chef Battle Royale Culinary Competition
  • National concerts on the Charter Center Stage
  • An art and wine walk
  • An interactive Marketplace Kids Kitchen
Free concerts will be by the All-American Rejects, Macy Gray and Taj Mahal.

New this year  is “Grand Tasting”–an upscale, private sampling from the area’s best establishments and free event parking for the day.

Hours are 4-11 p.m. on Friday; 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Saturday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. on Sunday.

Free: Nelly To Perform Saturday, July 21, At Soldiers Memorial

Nelly

Hip hop superstar Nelly will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Soldiers Memorial, Chestnut and 14th streets in downtown St. Louis.

He is the second highest selling hip hop artist of all time he has received three Grammys and three American Music Awards.

The Offspring, a punk rock band, will perform at  9 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Soldiers Memorial, Chestnut and 14th streets in downtown St. Louis.

The program is part of the Fair St. Louis summer concert series. Nelly will perform at the last concert on July 21.

Free: Michael Franti & Spearhead To Perform Tonight At Soldiers Memorial


Michael Franti

Michael Franti & Spearhead, a roots and reggae band, will perform at  9 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at Soldiers Memorial, Chestnut and 14th streets in downtown St. Louis.

The program is part of the Fair Saint Louis summer concert series entitled Celebrate St. Louis Summer Concerts at Soldiers Memorial in the heart of the city.

Other concerts include The Offspring on July 20. St. Louis’ own Nelly wraps up the series on July 21.

In the mid 90s, Michael Franti first formed the group Spearhead. It’s said that the group merged his positive and socially conscious attitude with his love for music to create roots and reggae tracks with powerful themes.  “The Sound of Sunshine,” which was  released in 2010 reaffirms Franti’s talent for connecting with fans.

Opening for Michael Franti is Über Cool at 6 p.m. and  Erin McCarley at 7:30 p.m.

The concert series is just one in a string of free music events that make St. Louis a great place for cheapskates to live or visit.

Other free concerts series include:

  • Jungle Boogie each Friday afternoon at the world-famous Saint Louis Zoo,
  • Whitaker Music Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden through July 25
  • Sounds at the Station at St. Louis Union Station through Sept. 20
  • The Compton Heights Concert Band in Francis Park on Sundays and Mondays through Aug. 6

There are plenty of free tunes in the burbs, too:

  • Ellisville offers free concerts in Bluebird Park on Thursday evenings through July 26
  • Kirkwood’s Summer Concert Series also happens Thursdays at Station Plaza through September.
  • The city of Chesterfield hosts free concerts in Faust Park every Tuesday through Aug. 14.

And on the other side of the river, several Illinois cities offer free concerts too:

  • The Alton Muny Band performs free concerts on Thursdays and Sundays through July 26
  • Grafton features free concerts in Grove Memorial Park along the Mississippi River through Aug. 9

Neon Trees, an alternative rock band, will perform at  9 p.m. Friday, July 13, at Soldiers Memorial, Chestnut and 14th streets in downtown St. Louis.

The program is part of the Fair St. Louis summer concert series. Other concerts which start at 9 p.m. are Michael Franti & Spearhead on July 14 and The Offspring on July 20. The final concert featuring Nelly starts at 8 p.m. July 21.

Free: Fair St. Louis Fourth of July Celebration In Downtown St. Louis Wednesday, Continuing On The Weekend

Fair St. Louis, St. Louis’ free Fourth of July celebration kicks off Wednesday with two morning runs and the VP parade and continues with three days of entertainment including an air show on the grounds of the Gateway Arch.

An 8 p.m. performance by the music duo Heart and a huge fireworks spectacular cap off the evening.

Here’s the schedule for Wednesday:

7 a.m.,  Freedom 4 Miler
8:30 a.m., Family Fun Run
10 a.m., 135th Annual Veiled Prophet Parade themed “Parade Around the World”
noon, Air Show
1  p.m., Cultural Stage performances
2 p.m., Pretty Little Empire– Music Video Contest Winner
3:30 p.m.,  Air Show
6 p.m., The Dirty Guv’nahs
8 p.m., Heart
9:20 p.m.,US Bank/Enterprise Rent-A-Car Fireworks

Kids Zone, Interactive Zone/Toyota Creation Station will keep the little ones happy throughout the day.

The free entertainment continues Friday evening with Third Eye Blind and Saturday evening with Dierks Bentley.

Two more two weekends of free music at Soldiers Memorial follows at the Celebrate St. Louis Summer Concerts.  Neon Trees performs on July 13, Michael Franti & Spearhead on July 14, The Offspring on July 20, and St. Louis’ own Nelly on July 21!

This year is the 32nd  year for the annual Fair Saint Louis celebration.

Free: Live Music Tonight At Soldiers Memorial

There’s still time to uncork!

St. Louis Uncorked: A Wine and Music Festival continues until 11 p.m. tonight at Soldiers Memorial in downtown St. Louis.

The music is free and you can purchase tickets to sample some of the 150 wines there.  Those include some Missouri and Illinois wines.

Attendees can also purchase food from St. Louis restauranteurs.

KMOX 1120, Fresh 102.5 and Y98 are sponsors of the event.

This year Stella Artois also offers tastings of its beers including four Belgian beer offerings from AB. And, in a new feature this year participants will be able to try samples of hand crafted spirits, distilled and bottled locally by Square One Brewery and Distillery.

It’s time to pop the cork and enjoy the music!

St. Louis Uncorked: A Wine and Music Festival returns to  Soldiers Memorial in downtown St. Louis on Saturday.

It’s a day for wine, food and music lovers with free live music from 3-11 p.m. Visitors can purchase tickets for food and samples of some 150 wines.

This year Stella Artois also offers tastings of its beers including four Belgian beer offerings from AB. And, in a new feature this year participants will be able to try samples of hand crafted spirits, distilled and bottled locally by Square One Brewery and Distillery.
