Free: Michael Franti & Spearhead To Perform Tonight At Soldiers Memorial

Michael Franti

Michael Franti & Spearhead, a roots and reggae band, will perform at  9 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at Soldiers Memorial, Chestnut and 14th streets in downtown St. Louis.

The program is part of the Fair Saint Louis summer concert series entitled Celebrate St. Louis Summer Concerts at Soldiers Memorial in the heart of the city.

Other concerts include The Offspring on July 20. St. Louis’ own Nelly wraps up the series on July 21.

In the mid 90s, Michael Franti first formed the group Spearhead. It’s said that the group merged his positive and socially conscious attitude with his love for music to create roots and reggae tracks with powerful themes.  “The Sound of Sunshine,” which was  released in 2010 reaffirms Franti’s talent for connecting with fans.

Opening for Michael Franti is Über Cool at 6 p.m. and  Erin McCarley at 7:30 p.m.

The concert series is just one in a string of free music events that make St. Louis a great place for cheapskates to live or visit.

Other free concerts series include:

  • Jungle Boogie each Friday afternoon at the world-famous Saint Louis Zoo,
  • Whitaker Music Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden through July 25
  • Sounds at the Station at St. Louis Union Station through Sept. 20
  • The Compton Heights Concert Band in Francis Park on Sundays and Mondays through Aug. 6

There are plenty of free tunes in the burbs, too:

  • Ellisville offers free concerts in Bluebird Park on Thursday evenings through July 26
  • Kirkwood’s Summer Concert Series also happens Thursdays at Station Plaza through September.
  • The city of Chesterfield hosts free concerts in Faust Park every Tuesday through Aug. 14.

And on the other side of the river, several Illinois cities offer free concerts too:
