On tap tonight for the Gazebo Series 2011 in Webster Groves: a concert by Supe Granda, a St. Louis man who made his name playing with The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. The movie is Weird Science where two nerdish boys attempt to create the perfect woman, but she turns out to be more than that. Staring Anthony Michael Hall and Kelly LeBrock. The concert is at 7 p.m. with the movie at 9 p.m. at Big Bend and Old Orchard.
Grab a blanket or some lawn chairs tonight and head to Art Hill in Forest Park where the St. Louis Art Museum‘s annual free Outdoor Film Series. The theme of the series is “American Cool: Cinematic Icons of 5o’s and 60′s Cool.” Tonight’s film: Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly This suspenseful mystery combines hot summer nights, cool Grace Kelly, voyeurism, and murder. An injured, homebound photojournalist can’t resist watching his neighbors through his apartment’s rear window until he imagines one of them has been murdered. Enlisting the help of his high society girlfriend and his nurse, he sets out to catch the killer. The film is shown at 9 p.m. but you can pack a picnic (alcoholic beverages are ok) and come early. Bug repellent is also suggested. The Art Museum’s website says this about the film: Set in glamorous New York, this film stars Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, the fashionable “it girl” with a secret. Adapted from a book by Truman Capote, the film combines Givenchy couture, slapstick comedy, and melancholy moments to create a romantic comedy with ’60s style. Upcoming films in the series:
This event is not “cheap” but Potterheads may find it worth the cost. It is, after all, 24 hours of Potter, a one-time celebration of the Harry Potter book series held at multiple site. The St. Louis event is at Crowne Plaza Hotel St. Louis – Clayton. It starts 6 p.m. on Friday, July 15 and runs to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 16 with panels and events going all night. Designed to be like a year at wizarding school, the event givers you wizard classes, quidditch games, discussions and lectures on the Harry Potter book series. Admission is $25 if you pre-register and $30 at the door. Head for Tower Grove Park‘s pool pavilion Saturday night for a free movie. It’s “Forrest Gump” starting at dusk.
Sappington Farmers’ Market, 8400 Sappington, will hold an event it’s calling “Cool Sampling Sunday” from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 17. Its notice promises “great sales with cool local vendors sampling cool local products” plus “prizes, fun, music and more.” And you can also get a coupon good for $7 off a purchase of $30 or more good from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. on Sunday, too. Ruby Tuesday is giving away free burgers on Tuesday. But to get one you’ll have to like the company on its Facebook page and do it quickly because they’re only giving coupons for the free burger to the first 100,000 people who respond. If you “like” Ruby Tuesday and you get to their Facebook page fast enough, they’ll email you the coupon for the free burger within a few hours.
Thanks to Palm Beach On The Cheap for the tip.
