Wineries + Live Music = Great Memorial Day Weekend In St. Louis Area

Ahh, Memorial Day weekend, that traditional start to summertime in the U.S.

If there’s a “traditional” food for this “traditional” holiday, it’s got to be burgers or dogs and maybe the “traditional” beverage is beer.

But if a brewski is not your, uh, cup of tea, maybe it’s vino. In fact, we can’t think of a more pleasant way to while away the holiday weekend than sipping wine at one of the area’s many nearby wineries enjoying the scenery and, in many cases, the live music.

Here are some wineries offering live music this weekend:

Adam Puchta Winery is not only the oldest winery in the state–and the country–the same family has owned it since 1855.

Located on a secluded, quiet tract a couple of miles outside of Hermann, this winery frequently offers live music on the lawn on the weekends.  This weekend it will be Varlett Hearts from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday 5/29/11.

Augusta Winery is located in quaint Augusta, Mo. overlooking the Missouri River Valley. In fact, Augusta was designated the first U. S. Wine District –the first American Viticultureal Area (AVA) also known as the Augusts Appellation because the area has vineyards that date to the 1800s.

Augusta, Winery is offering live music all weekend. Here’s the line-up:

Saturday, 1-5 p.m., Ed Belling (pop and rock)

Sunday, 1-5 p.m., Harmony Culbreath (folk rock/pop/rock)

Monday, 1-4 p.m., Ivan Smith (pop/rock/other)

For more information, call 636-228-4301 X 24 or click here.

Chandler Hill Winery says it’s the closest full-service winery to St. Louis. Located in the rolling hills near Defiance, it offers spectacular views of the Missouri River Valley.

The winery will close early Saturday and Sunday for private events but there will be live music earlier in the afternoon on both days.

Saturday, 1-4 p.m., Vince Martin

Sunday, 1-4 p.m., Alvin Jett

For more information, call 636-798-2675 or click here.

Montelle Winery in Augusta with its sweeping views of the Missouri River Valley is the idyllic place to sip a glass of wine and enjoy the free live music.

What a treat! Montelle is offering free entertainment all three days of the holiday weekend. Here’s who’s playing:

Saturday, noon-4 p.m., Doc-Rock-It (rock, club, rockabilly)

Saturday, 5-9 p.m., Saturday, Brian Clarke Duo (variety)

Sunday, 1-5 p.m., Stone Mountain Railroad (country rock)

Sunday, 6-9 p.m., Johnny Chase Duo

Monday, 1-4 p.m., Mark Moebeck (classic rock/pop/folk/novelty)

For more information, call 636-228-4464 x23 or click here.

Mount Pleasant Estates, the oldest winery in the Augusta Appellation, was started by two brothers from Germany. Today visitors can taste the wares in a 4,000-square-foot tasting room (there is a $5 charge for a flight of five wine tastings which is applied to any  wine purchase you decide to make) or sip wine on the terrace while enjoying expansive views of the Missouri River Valley.  Mount Pleasant Estates is located in Augusta, Mo.

This weekend you can enjoy three days of “Live Music On The Patio:”

Saturday, 1 p.m., Falling Martins

Sunday, 1 p.m.. Nikko Smith

Monday, 1 p.m. J. Barringhaus

For more information, call  636.482.9463 xt. 22 or click here.

Stone Hill Winery, perched above the picturesque town of Hermann, offers some of the most exquisite views of the Missouri River in the state—and the winery’s series of arched underground cellars are the largest in North America.  All of the elements combine to make a visit to this winery most memorable.

And, this weekend, there’s music to boot:

Saturday, 1-5p.m., Steve Leslie

Sunday, 1-5 p.m., Mark Moebeck

For more information, call 1-800-909-9463 or click here.

Vincentennial: Vincent's Daughter Victoria Price Speaks Tonight--On His Birthday

As Vincentennial, St. Louis’ tribute to the 100th birthday of former resident horror great Vincent Price comes to a close, perhaps the highlight of the event happens at 7 p.m. tonight at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. The event is free and open to the public.

Here’s what the Vincentennial website says about tonight’s talk:

“Exactly 100 years to the day after Vincent Price was born here in St. Louis, daughter Victoria Price offers an intimate remembrance of her famous father. Because of their close relationship and her access to his unpublished memoirs and letters, Victoria Price was able to provide a remarkably vivid account of her father’s public and private life in her essential book, “Vincent Price, a Daughter’s Biography.” In this special multimedia presentation, Victoria not only shares her insider’s view of Vincent Price’s extraordinary work in film, television, and theater but also offers fascinating detail on his early life in St. Louis, his world travels, and his abiding love for both art and cooking. Although Vincent Price remains a familiar movie icon, Victoria will give fresh insight into his life, sharing her unique daughter’s perspective.”

Also tonight: a performance of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” by John Contini as Vincent Price.

Vincentennial has been a week-long celebration of the actor’s birthday, his life and his works sponsored by MICDS (he was a 1929 graduate of St. Louis Country Day School) and Cinema St. Louis.
